Lynchburg Letter: J. William Gayner to John Victor

May 16, 1925

In this letter, Mr. Gayner informs Mr. Victor about his attempts to locate a man to replace him as factory manager. It also includes a comment about Mr. Eller and his role in the company, reflecting the previous conflict between Mr. Eller and Mr. Gayner over how to operate the plant.

Text was transcribed by Dennis Bratcher from the original letter. A scan of the original letter is below. The scan is truncated because the original is bound in a book.

[Lynchburg Glass Corporation Letterhead]

Mr. John Victor

Lynchburg, Va.

May 16, 1925

My dear Mr. Victor:-

I have inserted an add [sic] in the three leading glass papers, also written thirteen letters to my friends in the glass business. You will notice a copy of the advertisement and the form of letter that I have written to my friends. These men are the active men in such plants as the Owens, the Illinois, the Whital Tatum, the Hazel Atlas, and the rest are the firms that supply glass machinery and clay products to the Glass Industry.

All of these men I knew personally and should get some favorably [sic] replys [sic] as to a type of man that I would like to see take my place in the Lynchburg Glass Corporation.

I feel if we get a high type glass manager having execetive [sic] ability we will have accomplished the proper thing.

I firmly believe that this plant can be made a very successful and profitable industry and that Mr. Eller is capable of taking care of the sales and financial end, but I think He had better leave the requirements of the factory to the factory manager.

When you are through with the enclosed list of names and copy of advertisement will you kindly mail them back to me?

With kind regard, I beg to remain,

Yours very truly,

[signed] J William Gayner
